    Join Sonoko Sakai as she teaches you how to make and serve traditional Nihachi style Soba. Soba is the traditional hand-rolled and cut buckwheat noodles that have been enjoyed as a nourishing healing food in Japan since ancient times.

    Students will gain a new appreciation for Japanese food and culture while hand-making soba noodles, using a blend of fresh, native stone ground organic buckwheat flour from Japan and Sonora wheat flour from a new crop from Tehachapi, California.

    We will finish the workshop with tastings of Seiro style Chicken and Leek soba with Tsukemen Soup. Vegan / Vegetarian option is with mushrooms and leeks. The meals will be followed by Japanese fruit dessert and you'll even get to take home 2 servings of soba and dipping sauces.  The menu is subject to availability of ingredients.

    Please arrive 15 minutes early and check in at the brand new Poketo Project Space at the Row, a new community of independent retailers and restaurants. Parking is free in the parking structure on site. All materials are included in the workshop and you will get to cook and taste your own soba along with other side dishes made by Sonoko.

  • Sonoko Sakai is a Japanese cooking teacher, food industry advocate, and food writer based in Los Angeles. She is also the founder of Common Grains, a cultural and agricultural project, dedicated to providing a deeper appreciation and understanding of Japanese food and culture. After studying soba making in Tokyo,

    Sonoko is on a passionate pursuit to make soba as accessible in America as ramen and pasta. She is focused on teaching the importance of sustainable production of heirloom grains within a healthy lifestyle. Her stories and recipes have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Saveur, Lucky Peach, KCRW Good Food, and Migrant Kitchen. Sonoko also wrote The Poetical Pursuit of Food: Japanese Recipes for American Cooks (Potter), Ricecraft (Chronicle Books). Her new cookbook on Soba will release in Fall 2018.
