Knotting connects us to the past and grounds us in the present, using hand and mind in skillful play like an active meditation. The limitless possibilities of a single cord, connecting and intertwining, was thought by our ancestors to explain the workings of the cosmos and activate the powers of the subconscious. From the manifestation powers of Chinese knots to the metaphysical principles in Celtic designs, craftsmen and women from around the world communicated systems of belief through knots. By expressing our dreams through a system of symbols, knots also propel us into the future. Knotted wall hangings are a way to bring the meanings of specific knots into your space, as many ancient cultures believed knots could help us to remember and manifest.

    In this 4-hour workshop, you'll:
    • Learn the fundamental concepts of knotting and knot symbolism
    • Set an intention and learn how to create a knotting practice
    • Learn to read knotting diagrams, discover a variety of knotting techniques, and brainstorm ideas for projects
    • Learn how to create tassels, bead rope, and attach charms
    • Create a large wall hanging based on a sequence of ancient knots that express your dreams and desires.

You will get to take home:

    • 50 feet of cotton rope
    • small brass charms
    • a knotting board
    • an instructional booklet guiding you through 12 knots and inspiring future projects
    • a sheet of graphing paper for note taking and design planning
    • cardboard sizers for tassel-making
    • a needle, thread, and straight pins
    • Please bring a pen or pencil and a yoga mat or cushion for sitting since you'll be working with a large quantity or rope and sitting might be easier. This workshop is limited to 14 students.
    • Lise Silva Gomes is an artist based in Oakland, CA. She explores the power of symbols through her work with Sacred Knots creating fiber jewelry and wallhangings with handmade cord entwined in knot designs that serve as a metaphor for life experiences, dreams, and deep desires. She also collaborates with metalsmith making jewelry. As an extension of Lise's exploration of symbology, meditation and visualization are a tool in her creative process.
