Born in Los Angeles to an American mother and a Japanese father, Noguchi was one of the twentieth century’s most critically acclaimed sculptors. He traveled extensively and also created gardens, furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, architecture and set designs. His work, at once traditional and modern, set a new standard for the reintegration of the arts. In 1951, Noguchi was asked by the mayor of the small town of Gifu, Japan to help revitalize the local lantern industry. Inspired by the fishing lanterns of the Nagara River, he made more than 200 models of Akari light sculptures out of handcrafted washi paper, bamboo and metal. By merging ancient craft with electricity, Noguchi created an entirely new kind of contemporary art.
