We love this town. Summers are hot and humid, the people are warm and friendly, and the art & design scene is thriving. Most importantly, you will not go hungry. Here are some of our favorite places to visit, things to do, & places to eat while you are in Austin.
If you don’t want to wait for the hype that is Franklin’s BBQ, just as delicious is la Barbecue. We still had to wait in line a little over an hour, but with the free beer on tap, it makes things go by fast. The food is amazing; we got a sampler of everything and took leftovers with us.
Also in East Austin is a beautiful dinner spot called Launderette. While you wait for your table, you can hang outside on their mid-century outdoor furnishings and relax with a cocktail or a cold Pearl Snap Pils, a definite Austin favorite.
Not only a place to catch the latest blockbuster, but the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is also known for their food and drink and as a nice little spot to cool down from the Austin heat.
A favorite retail spot in Austin is By George. There are a couple of locations, this stunner being the one on South Congress. They carry some great brands, including LA’s Ben Medansky, Dosa, and Marfa furniture designers, Jamey and Constance Garza.
The Texas sky is a crisp bright blue. James Turrell’s commissioned Skyspace on the Rice University campus is a perfect place to experience this beauty. It’s open all day, but be sure to make a reservation for the sunset viewing as that is the only time when Turrell’s light show inside the sky space interacts with the sky.
A visit to Austin is not complete without a bike ride around the park and a swim in Barton Springs Pool. It’s actually fed by the mighty Colorado River! Everyone swims and cools off… it’s amazing.
