The alley way adjacent to our house is constantly filthy. Neighbors don’t seem to care, people throw trash and unwanted furniture without a care. Not long after, others do the same. Trash beget more trash.
I find myself visiting the alley every week, picking up what I can and always calling the the city “311″ number for debris pick up and street sweeping (you can also use the 311 phone system for graffiti removal). Although, Los Angeles city is pretty slow to respond and never does a really good job. There always seems to be some trash that remains and this becomes a signal for inconsiderate neighbors to continue dumping their junk.
Today, it was different. I didn’t call these guys. I don’t know who did. But, the LA Conservation Corps were in full effect cleaning the neighborhood. The goal of the LA Conservation Corps is to “offer at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities to succeed by providing them with job training, education, and work skills training with an emphasis on environmental and service projects that benefit the community.”
Today’s clean up was part of the corps “clean and green” program. After who knows how many years, things are getting done. I thanked each and every one of these kids out there today, it took all of them to do this job. Lets hope it stays clean.
This is just a portion of the trash, junk and weeds they picked up.
