Has anyone else been rockin’ their heads to the new Gorillaz album lately?
I’ve never really given their music much thought during the days of Demon Days, but in the past five years, I’ve discovered that a huge cult following exists. Their latest video, “Stylo” for their third album Plastic Beach was probably overshadowed by the mayhem that surrounded OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” but we think it definitely deserves some legit blog cred.
Brief history on the Gorillaz: Started in 1998 by Damon Albarn of Blur and English comic book artist, Jamie Hewlett Christopher. Awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successul Virtual Band, Gorillaz really is comprised of one permanent musician, Albarn, while Christopher is the one responsible for bringing his music to life in the bands 4 fictional members: 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. What’s even greater is that each has their own Wikipedia page that is accompanied by a substantial biography. In their newest album, you will hear some really amazing collaborations including: Little Dragon, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, De La Soul, and the Lebanese Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music.
Who knew Bruce Willis was a Gorillaz fan? Parlophone Records President stated it best when he described the song as “a dark, twisted track that sounds like the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ soundtrack on MDMA”.
Also found a really awesome remix by Alex Metric here.
