We’re looking forward to the “It Rained All Day” opening party and art show happening this Friday, January 18th at the Poketo Store. There is no better way to kick off the year than with a live music show, art show, and book signing with artist, Mel Kadel and ((SOUNDER)). To get your curiosity piqued, we thought we’d share some insight from the creators behind the collaborative book and soundtrack.
Kicking things off is an interview with LA artist Mel Kadel, who lent her texture-rich illustrations to the music and lyrics of “It Rained All Day”, an original composition by Austin musician ((SOUNDER)) aka Michael David Aho. Mel is also a long time Poketo collaborator, she did a wallet for us back in 2009! Without further ado, lets hear from Mel about what we can expect for the upcoming show this Friday.
1. When you listened to “It Rained All Day”, how did the music and lyrics inspire or inform your illustrations?
The song is so beautiful and I immediately related to it on a visual level. There is a lot of power behind the lyrics and music, along with a certain quietness. So, I just wanted to balance out that power and serenity in my drawings.
2. How do the illustrations complement the song? How did you work with Michael to develop the illustrations?
The mood behind our work is similar, so I think they naturally compliment one another. Even though these drawings are made specifically for this song, I want the art to be able to stand alone from whatever words it’s accompanied by.
That’s usually how I approach Illustration in general. Michael didn’t want it to be too literal. He just asked me to illustrate each stanza, and gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted with it.
3. Can you describe your artistic style? How does your style complement the song?
Because I draw with pen & ink, I would describe it as illustrative. There are clusters of intricate line work, mixed with a lot of negative space. Michael’s music feels like that to me….where the music feels very heavy and thick at times, but also has a simplicity to it.
4. Are there particular themes you like to showcase through your art?
Pushing through struggles and daily battles, are common themes in my work. But, there is some humor underlying it all.
5. Congratulations on your first hardcover book! How is it different illustrating for a book compared to other formats that you have done?
I’ve made a number of zines, so this felt similar to that. It’s great to take a collection of drawings and see how they fit together as a whole. That hardcover is such a nice bonus.
6. What are your plans for the opening party? What are you and Michael going to do?
We’ll probably have a few beers, and do a couple cartwheels.
