Animation Explored, Shuhan Teoh

If you’ve been keeping an eye on our video feed, you know we have good talent on board. Introducing, Shuhan Teoh, our Summer animation intern currently at Poketo all the way from Rhode Island.

Half Taiwanese and half Malaysian, Shuhan Teoh pulls inspiration from everywhere. She’s in her sophomore year at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) majoring in Film/Animation/Video. She’s looking to make it big in the sci-fi/tech special effects industry someday. Say hello to Shuhan, guys!

Describe yourself without using the words “animator” and “filmmaker.”
I am an enthusiastic artist trying to get out of my small suburban hometown to explore, experience, and expand.

What keeps you centered?
Laughter

What makes you cringe?
Stretchy rubberbands are my worst fear

What three sci-fi movies made you want to do what you do?
What really made me want to pursue special effects are Ironman, Transformers 1-3, and Star Wars.

Why RISD?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do until junior year of high school. I wasn’t particularly good at any subject and I spent most of my time doodling on the side of my notes. It makes sense that I ended up at RISD.

During art class one day, my friend mentioned RISD to me and I realized that art might be the direction I wanted to take. After I realized I needed a portfolio to apply for art school, I enrolled in my first art class that summer.

Coolest thing about RISD?
Interesting people and quaint stores (a really rad 60s broadway theatre). There is a real sense of community. Everyone helps each other because we appreciate good art. Plus, we have cool events like Z-day where we dress up like zombies and parade around the streets, and our Halloween costumes are some of the most unique I’ve ever seen.

Why intern at Poketo?
I found Poketo through the RISD internship finder page and thought it sounded fun. When I browsed through Poketo’s page, I immediately fell in love with all the creative and functional products. I imagined how they might move and thought it would be interesting if they were put into an world of their own. I love the idea of “art for your everyday” and wanted to promote that in the way I knew how.

You made an awesome video animating the Poketo wallets. What’s the best part about making it?
I had two favorite parts in making this animation. One was creating all the different scenes on Photoshop. I really enjoyed capturing the summer feeling and putting my fun experiences in California to good use. I also had fun animating the fireworks. Overall, the whole piece was so much fun that it didn’t seem like work at all.

How did you choose to start with Jennifer Sanchez’s wallet among the many you could choose from on Poketo?
I chose the Jennifer Sanchez wallet because there were many elements to work with and it gave me a chance to be free with the animation. It was abstract enough where I could invent a transition in and out of the wallet world. Also, the colors are very fun and draws a lot of attention.

What’s the biggest lesson you learned making the video?
In order to create a good piece of work, the best thing is to find experiences in your own life and share it with others. It’s surprising how people react and identify with it. You not only get to share your memories, but you also help other people remember theirs.
(Also, back everything up. My computer crashed halfway through and I was lucky that nothing was lost. But for a moment, I thought I was going to have to restart D:)

If you could be any character in any movie, who would you be and why?
I think I would be Lilo from Lilo and Stitch because she is a quirky girl with an open mind, loves photography, and has an awesome blue pet. Also, I would love to live in Hawaii.
