2014 Workshop Highlights

A look at some of the many, many workshops held at the Poketo Flagship and Poketo at The Line in 2014. From loom weaving with All Roads Studio to ceramics with Ben Medansky, we invited some of the most talented people in their fields to give intimate groups of students a hands-on learning experience.


Leather Belt Making with Steven Soria

Steven Soria of Make Smith Leather Co. taught workshoppers how to turn a basic piece of leather into a custom leather belt.

Hand Lettering with Drew Melton

Renowned letterer Drew Melton instructed students in the art of hand lettering, encouraging them to find their own style along the way.

Floral Design with Yasmine Khatib

In advance of Valentine’s Day, floral designer Yasmine Khatib filled the Poketo Flagship with statement stems, encouraging workshoppers to mix and match their own arrangements while experimenting with color, symmetry, and balance.

Cathy Callahan Fiber Arts Workshop

Jewelry designer and textile artist Cathy Callahan assisted students in creating their own fiber art jewelry pieces, referencing famous textile artists such as Sheila Hicks and Annie Albers.

Ceramics with Ben Medansky

LA-based ceramicist Ben Medansky led an intimate group of students through the process of making a terracotta planter by hand, from molding and shaping the clay to kiln firing.

Paper Flower Making Workshop at The Line Hotel

Ji Kim of Blooms in the Air led her popular Paper Flower Making Workshop on the terrace at The Line Hotel, teaching students how to craft their own everlasting bouquets from high quality crepe paper in a myriad of bold shades.

Modern Calligraphy with Maybelle Imasa Stukuls

Expert calligrapher Maybelle Imasa Stukuls led a series of workshops on the craft of calligraphy, instructing students in using a pen, nib, and ink and encouraging them to cultivate their own artistic expressions.

Visual Social Media with Bonnie Tsang

Social media guru Bonnie Tsang led her practical and informative Visual Social Media workshop at The Line Hotel, teaching students how to make the most of social media platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter.

Loom Weaving Workshop with All Roads Studio

In June, textile artist Janelle Pietrzak of the creative workshop All Roads Studio taught a workshop on loom weaving, incorporating unconventional materials such as raffia, rope, and wool. Participants went home with a custom wooden frame loom, yarn, and needle to finish their works in progress.

Crazy for Kimchi Workshop

Lydia Kim, the mother of Poketo’s co-founder, Angie, led a workshop on making three kinds of kimchi – nappa cabbage, cucumber, and radish – entirely from scratch, sans preservatives or MSG. Students got their hands dirty while gaining insight into the history of this beloved Korean side dish.

Lighting Design with Brendan Ravenhill

Lighting designer Brendan Ravenhill led his much-loved workshop at the Poketo Flagship. Participants learned the ins and outs of lighting and electricity and left with their own brass pendant lamp.

Marbling Workshop with Paige Cleveland

In late October, Textile designer Paige Cleveland of Rule of Three Studio taught workshoppers the art of marbling on paper. Students began by learning traditional patterns based on ancient Turkish and Japanese techniques, and once the basics had been mastered, they were invited to experiment with creating their own color palettes and unique patterns.

Cocktail Workshop with Pharmacie

Just in time for all those holiday parties, Talmadge Lowe of Pharmacie fame led a workshop on crafting the perfect cocktail. Workshop participants mixed, shook, and strained a variety of cocktail classics, plus a few modern renditions.
