Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. They use aggressive strategies and tactics to stop the killing of whales–directly confronting whaling ships and risking their own lives to save whales.
The founder, Captain Paul Watson, was one of the original founding members of Greenpeace in 1969. You can read about many of the radical things they accomplished here. In 1977, Watson left Greenpeace because of disagreements on tactics and with the emerging bureaucratic structure of the organization. Basically, to protect the ocean, he needed to continue to be radical, quick, aggressive.
Just the other day, one of the Sea Shepherd stealth ships was deliberately rammed by whaling ship, Shonan Maru No. 2. The Sea Shepherd Society has filed piracy charges against the captain of the whaling ship. Sea Shepherd legal representative Liesbeth Zegveld says, “This was close to murder. It was such an extreme act that if no-one takes action now, we may have an even more serious incident in future.”
