Look out, NYC! FriendsWithYou is on a mission to infect everyone with the “happy virus”
To celebrate the opening of ten new blocks at the High Line, the Friends of the High Line commissioned four new public art installations and 100 public events for the summer. We’re happy to see the line-up includes our friends over at FriendsWithYou, Sam and Tury.
Since the High Line opened to the public 2009, this abandoned railroad track turned urban park has been attracting visitors out to the Meatpacking District and giving the residents a bit of green to call their own. FriendsWithYou are adding red, blue, yellow to that color scheme. Sam and Tury are staging Rainbow City to New York City, in their first large-scale installation in the city.
FWY co-founder Tury Sandoval describes the Rainbow City as “a garden of spirits and magic that we have been traveling and installing around the globe.” It’s the third time duo have staged Rainbow City. This magic land has also appeared at at Art Basel Miami and in Toronto.
This time around Rainbow City stretches an impressive 16,000-square-feet filled with brightly colored and striped helium-filled sculptures on a striped floor. For those lucky enough to be in New York at this time, you cannot miss them at “The Lot” on 30th street.
Check out these great photos from Dave Pinter:
We love the beautiful colors inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi, where people throw colored powder and water at each other.
We also hear some of FWY’s friendly characters will be going out in the city to spread the magic.
FWY’s colorful style is unmistakable…and it never fails to lighten the mood. It’s the same fun, bright style the duo brings to everything they create too.
As if that weren’t enough, the duo will also be busy over at the Bowery with their first New York solo exhibition entitled, “:)”, which opens June 9 at The Hole NYC. FWY promises to “fill the gallery with a crowd of smiling faces and an interactive, experiential wonderland of pop-straction and participation.
By the looks of things FWY’s on a roll, spreading their message of Magic, Luck and Friendship all over the world. Now that’s really something to smile about.
