Tornado Potato!
totally forgot i had this until i was reminded by the lovely shezz.
what a crazily amazing way to present (& cook) a potato!
came dusted with a fine cheese powder, a bit like the stuff you find on Twisties.
quite yum, like a one super long deep fried crisp!
have seen it in Hongdae & Myeongdong but am it’s in loads of other places.
more food theatrics, please! ^^

Dusted with fine cheese powder! Now that’s one tornado I’d like to swept up into!
Where have you guys been? Spiral-cut taters, also called “butterfly spuds” and whatnot, have been all over county fairs all over the eastern US for at least eight years. It comes out like a pile of Siamese-twin potato chips. And you can get cheese sauce and bacon bits on them. Five bucks… four on a bad day. The shiznat at fairs this year? Deep-fried Coke. That’s Coca-Cola syrup dropped into the oil, so it ends up tasting like oily rock candy. And earlier this month, alongside the old-skool deep-fried Twinkies and Snickers bars and Oreos, I found… deep-fried corn-on-the-cob and deep-fried STRAWBERRIES.
Looks absolutely delicious!
Had one of those at the Henry County, Tennessee Fair this summer. not bad.
No cheese powder, though; just lots of salt.

Interesting and beautiful snack. I have never been to South Korea but will be on the lookout if ever I go. :)
We also have those in México. They call them espiropapas, at least in my region. They taste pretty good with tomato sauce.
[…] Spiral-cut fried whole potato: Korean junk-food Published September 29th, 2007 Food , Lifestyle Tornado Potatoes — new street-food from South Korea. It’s a spiral-cut potato, deep fried and dusted with tangy cheezy powder. Yes, it’s unhealthy, but the Koreans have a long way to go if they’re going to bridge the US-Korean junk-food gap — hello, deep-fried Coca-Cola! Get that potato some whipped mayo and maybe some rat-poison (or plutonium) and we’ll be in business. Link (via Neatorama)via: http://boingboing.net/ […]

Interesting, now we need to see them at McDonald’s, possibly called the Tornado McSpud, sprinkled with some of that coating they use on cheddar and sour cream potato chips, Ranch or Jalapeno flavor would work too…

Chipstix (tornado potato - is a new name) was initially invented in South Africa way over a decade ago. This concept has been further developed and Chipstix machines along with the full product range including the mouth-watering flavour salts can be bought globally. The salt range is due to be released in shakers for retail. For further information visit www.chipstix.org or you can visit www.tornadopotato.net

I’m Looking to buy cutters to do this where can I get this from? does any one have a US Number? These are great.
You can call +44(0)7856469290 to buy a machine. The business is registered in the State of Texas as well but have no contact number. or visit www.chipstix.org for further information. Best of luck
*laughing*
it doesn’t need a machine to do this. there’s a small cutter you can buy at almost any kitchen gadget shop (at least here in Canada), not sure what it’s called, but I had one for many years till I tossed it. it’s basically a slicer with a hole in one end (for your finger to go into making it easy to spiral it) and a little spiral widget (not sure of the correct term) that goes into the centre of the potato. as you spin the slicer, it slowly makes its way down the spud. presto, spiral spuds!!!
Of course you need the machine without it how would the potato stay on the stick?

This is a Chipstix/Tornado potato, It’s a global franchise. There are commercially available twist cutters but they only spiral cut veg (You aren’t going to use one of those finger ring pull blades on something as thick as a potato), the machine is necessary to cut around the stick. Check out their website: http://www.chipstix.net - http://www.tornadopotato.net
