It all started with a simple “thank you” email to our friend Luke Ramsey, co-founder of Islands Fold for designing Poketo’s sweet Animal Mugs. Islands Fold is an independent publisher and artist residency located on Pender Island, Canada, their residency promotes solo projects, collaboration, health and well being. As we were gearing up for shows at Poketo in 2009, we asked if Islands Fold would be interested in doing an event with us at the Poketo Studio. Needless to say, a date was set, our gears were turning for a vision to set up a different kind of art show, and “Islands in LA” was born.

We at Poketo are very excited to be joining hands with Luke Ramsey and Angela Conley the founders of Islands Fold, along with Los Angeles artists Travis Millard, Marco Zamora, Derek Albeck, Joel Speasmaker, and James Gulliver Hancock to present to you a special all day exhibition titled, “Islands in LA.” This show will be as spontaneous in nature as it was when planned. We’ll be transforming Poketo Studio into a home in honor of Islands Fold’s dedication to health and well being as an artists residency, so get ready to get comfortable! Don’t think we can turn our loft into their woodsy cabin in Canada (see pic below), but, we’ll do our best to make it cozy!

Unlike average art shows where the end piece is all you see, “Islands in LA” will be a show that’s in constant motion. At 3 pm, everyone is invited to hang out with the artists and watch them work together as they create new original pieces to be showcased and purchased later that evening.

At 6 pm, the official party will begin displaying all the art that was made earlier in the day along with a rare on-site assembly of hand-made zines, each made one of a kind by the artists. Poketo will be releasing a special edition tee-shirt featuring a collaborative design by all the artists later that evening as well. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted with more eye candy on the tees in our later blogs, so keep reading and we hope you can make it to the show!

Plus, Urth Cafe, which just opened its door in our hood in downtown LA is generously donating great coffee and pastries! So come on down and hang with the artists and watch the art happen!
